From a young age, I have been intrigued by technology, especially cameras and computers. If you had asked 12-year-old Ryan what he wanted to be when he grew up, he would have said ‘filmmaker’. Through my high school years I studied and learned how to shoot and edit movies. At the age of 17 I decided filmmaking was not the path for me, though I knew I wanted to be behind a camera. This is when I started applying myself to photography. The process of shooting, editing and creating a single image was magical to me - how a single photograph can speak a million words. I have always been drawn to portraiture because of the depth that can be read from a single face.
‘Individualize’ is an exploration into the uniqueness and individuality of everyday people. I challenged my subjects, prior to shooting, to provide me with a single quote - one that they believe portrays them and/or their philosophy. From these quotes I planned and executed photo shoots for each person. The images are intended to differentiate the characteristics and personalities of each individual. I invite you to come and explore the photographs and admire them both as a collective, and as separate images.
